When did life appear on Earth?

The Earth was formed from a solar nebula about 4.5 billion years ago
“Our study strongly suggests that between 3.75 and 4.28 billion years ago, there were already a lot of different types of bacteria on Earth”, Papineau comments. — “This means that life could have appeared on our planet as early as 300 million years after its formation”, he adds. That is, as early as 4.2 billion years ago!
The discovery is important for the search for extraterrestrial life. — “Under the right conditions, life can appear really quickly”, Papineau notes. — “And this increases the chances of its existence on exoplanets, or extrasolar planets”, he concludes.
“As late as the 1950s, it was thought that life was no more than 600 million years old,” — Bill Bryson wrote in A Brief History of Almost Everything. “In the 1970s, a few bold souls speculated that it might be as old as 2.5 billion years. The now-accepted figure of 3.85 billion years implies a surprisingly early beginning of life.”
